Versatile Pressure Washing for All Exterior Surfaces

Pressure Washing vs Pressure Cleaning: Is ther a Difference?

While the terms “pressure washing” and “pressure cleaning” are often used interchangeably, they refer to different techniques and applications.

1. PRESSURE WASHING SERVICES

Pressure washing involves using lower pressure and a more controlled flow rate, making it ideal for surfaces that need care over force. Depending on the job, it can be done with hot or cold water, with or without cleaning agents.

Because it’s gentler, pressure washing is well suited to cleaning things like vehicles, boats, caravans, glass balustrades, solar panels, house exteriors, windows and glass balustrades, and roofs. It’s less about blasting dirt away, and more about applying the right pressure in the right way especially for delicate or coated surfaces. In some cases, this overlaps with what’s known as soft washing, where very low pressure is combined with cleaning solutions to achieve safe, effective results.

2. PRESSURE CLEANING SERVICES

Pressure cleaning involves the use of higher water pressure and increased flow rates to break through heavier build-up on hard-wearing surfaces. It’s designed to lift and flush out stubborn contaminants like mould, moss, algae, dirt, oil, and stains from dense materials.

This method is ideal for jobs where durability matters think concrete driveways, brick walls, paved areas, retaining walls, tiles, hardstands, and industrial surfaces. It’s the go-to approach when the goal is deep surface restoration, not just a cosmetic clean.

Done right, it’s fast, effective, and the best option for hardwearing surfaces.

THE THREE MAIN TYPES OF PRESSURE CLEANING SERVICES EXPLAINED

There are three core methods: High-Pressure Cleaning, Soft Washing (house washing), and Hot Water Pressure Cleaning (sometimes called Power Washing). While the techniques may be few, the range of applications is extensive and unmatched in the world of exterior cleaning.

In the hands of a skilled operator, a system that generates its own hot water can do far more than tidy up driveways or building exteriors. When combined with adjustable pressure and flow settings, it sets the benchmark for professional pressure cleaning. With the right setup, these systems adapt easily to a wide variety of spaces and materials. And no matter the setting, the outcome is consistent, a space that’s cleaner, safer, and better maintained.

High-Pressure Cleaning

High-pressure cleaning is a robust and highly effective external cleaning service, typically operating between 1,000 and 5,075 PSI. It can be used with cold water, hot water and steam. Designed for hard-wearing surfaces, it delivers a deep cleaning effect removing built-up dirt, grime, and shifting stubborn stains that standard cleaning methods can’t touch.

What Types of Surfaces Are Best for High Pressure Cleaning?

High-pressure cleaning is ideal for tough, hard-wearing surfaces and works really well across a range of outdoor and commercial settings. Here are just a few of the places where it really proves its worth:

  • Tiled Pool Surfaces – Clears away algae, calcium deposits, and grime, helping pool areas stay clean, safe, and visually appealing.
  • Concrete Driveways and Pavers – Refreshes worn surfaces by breaking through dirt, stains, moss, and algae that have built up over time.
  • Car Parks – Well suited to large, high-use areas that require a thorough, consistent clean across concrete.
  • Footpaths and Walkways – Cuts through layers of dirt, weeds, and slippery build-up to improve both appearance and safety.
  • Chewing Gum Removal – When combined with hot water and steam, it softens and lifts stuck-on gum from concrete and other surfaces quickly and cleanly.

SOFT WASHING SERVICES

Soft Washing (house washing) is a gentle but highly effective cleaning method, designed to safely treat the exterior of homes, buildings, and many other types of delicate surfaces.

In short, soft washing is about precision, safety, and long-lasting results especially for materials that need a gentler touch.

How is Soft Washing Used?

Soft washing is a low-pressure cleaning method designed to safely clean delicate exterior surfaces without causing damage. Unlike high-pressure cleaning, which relies on force, soft washing uses low-pressure (typically under 500 PSI) combined with specially formulated cleaning solutions which are used to break down dirt, mould, mildew, algae, and other organic growth, minerals and environmental contaminants at the source.

Soft washing is designed to safely remove:

  • Organic Growth – Mould, mildew, algae, lichen, and moss that thrive on shaded or moisture-prone surfaces like roofs, render, and painted exteriors.

  • Biological Contaminants – Bird droppings, vermin waste, and other unsanitary buildup that can stain surfaces and pose health risks.

  • Insect Residue & Cobwebs – Spiders, insects, and their webs often collect around windows, eaves, and light fixtures, soft washing clears these away without damage.

  • Environmental Contaminants – Windblown dust, pollen, dirt, soot, and combustion pollutants from traffic or nearby industry that cling to walls, roofs, and facades.

  • Mineral Stains & Salt Deposits – Especially in coastal or high-humidity environments, soft washing can help reduce surface-level salt residue and light mineral buildup.

Hot Water Pressure Cleaning

Hot water pressure cleaning has reshaped the way professionals approach exterior cleaning. The combining of heat, steam, and pressure goes far beyond what cold water pressure cleaning can achieve. It is the preferred method for everything from stubborn grease removal to large-scale commercial surface cleaning and chemical-free thermal treat.

Thanks to its adaptability, hot water systems can be used across both house washing and high-pressure cleaning applications, offering a practical solution for a wide range of surfaces and settings.

Why Hot Water Pressure Cleaning Makes a Real Difference

What makes hot water pressure cleaning so effective isn’t just the heat, it’s how heat, pressure, and flow work together to break down grime faster and more thoroughly. The high temperature speeds up cleaning reactions, helping break down grease, grime, and organic build-up faster and more effectively than cold water alone. This method works particularly well when you need to:

  • Loosen and dissolve oil, grease, and stubborn surface grime
  • Cut through set-in stains and tough contaminants
  • Thermally neutralise mould, algae, bacteria, and mildew at the source
Hot Water vs Cold Water Pressure Cleaning: Why Heat Matters

Hot water pressure cleaning offers several performance advantage over cold water. The added heat enhances cleaning efficiency, often eliminating the need for chemicals while achieving a deeper, more complete clean.

One of the biggest benefits is the difference it makes to the final result surfaces look noticeably brighter, stay cleaner for longer, and dry faster. This makes it ideal for areas with regular foot traffic, commercial spaces, or situations where safety and turnaround time matter. Whether you’re working with outdoor hardscapes or high-use public areas, hot water pressure cleaning consistently delivers better, longer-lasting outcomes.

8 SHOULD ASK QUESTIONS (SAQ’s)
PRESSURE WASHING

In the even a worker or the machine operator is accidentally injured they will always be covered for any immediate medical expenses and ongoing medical expenses also, their rehabilitation, and any loss of income.

Companies who do not have Workers Compensation Insurance typically charge much less for their services.

The most important thing for you the owner to know is, if anyone were injured on your property you may liable for medical and loss of income. As the owner you are responsible for anyone injured on your property whether or not you are responsible for causing the injury.

Incredibly, I have NEVER been asked this question so I would have to imagine the same or similar for other pressure cleaning companies.

Cleanpass Services we guarantee all our work!

We provide a Performance Guarantee and this guarantee is written company policy available to view on our website publicly. The fact we’ve taken the time to list this Policy on our website shows we are serious about our commitment to our guarantee, unlike many of our competitors who simply offer a verbal guarantee.

A good question to ask a pressure cleaning company is whether they can show you before and after photos of work they have completed.

Beyond that, you should examine them thoroughly by either checking their Google Review and by viewing their Social Media Posts looking for comments and overall customer satisfaction.

Steer clear of any pressure cleaning company that isn’t willing to show photos of their previous work. If they’re proud of their past work they should be more than happy to share the proof with you.

Many pressure cleaning companies will tell you the magic is in the chemicals they use. That may be the case but knowing the types of chemicals they use is more important than you think. After finding out, do your own research on these chemicals so you can make an informed decision as to whether you’re happy to have these chemicals sprayed around your home or property.

All pressure cleaning companies use chlorinated chemicals from time to time. If it happens to be the case at your property be sure to ask them what mitigation processes (if any) are they taking to ensure your lawns and gardens remain unaffected?

Cleanpass Services hold $20million Liability Insurance (best practice).

Surprisingly, in the past almost 15 years I have only ever been asked this question a handful of times.

To put this question into context it’s important you know why you’re asking this question.

When water is heated to 70° Celsius it effectively doubles its cleaning power. It’s capacity to clean increases enormously every 30° Celsius above this.

Our state-of-the-art pressure cleaner operates at temperatures up to 155° Celsius. You may well ask, “how is this possible when water turns to steam at 100° Celsius”? Great question, this extreme temperature is made possible through an inbuilt diesel powered boiler system, under pressure in the boiler temperatures well above 100° Celsius are easily achievable.

This system makes our hot water pressure cleaner incomparably more effective and efficient when compared to the cheaper and more commonly prevalent cold water pressure cleaner.

Not all pressure cleaners are created equal. Many low-cost machines on the market are limited to cold water, fixed output, and short run times often used by newer operators with minimal setup.

At Cleanpass Services, we’ve invested over $50,000 in a fully customised system capable of operating from 500 to 5075 PSI and heating from 30°C to 155°C. We can safely soft wash or tackle extreme industrial cleaning with precision, thanks to adjustable pressure and flow rates, hot water and steam capability, chemical proportioning, and a full range of accessories. In short: there’s no pressure cleaning task we’re not equipped to handle.

Pressure cleaning isn’t an exact science so experience is crucial in determining the best pressure cleaner for you.

The best operators should be adaptable, flexible, forward thinking, and be able to think outside the square. These traits are invaluable and only found in the most experienced operators. Operators need to know their capabilities, their equipment and the chemicals they use intimately.
